Prepping the skin properly underneath the eye area is extremely important for tear proof eye makeup. Hydrating the skin helps to minimize fine lines. Avoid excessive setting powder in this area, as it can emphasize dryness and wrinkles. Try an eye pad that reduces puffiness and hydrates. A chilled jade roller will feel absolutely amazing and encourages lymphatic drainage. Jade rollers naturally brighten the skin by boosting blood flow and increasing circulation. Use alongside your skincare products.

Start With The Eyes

For long lasting tear proof eye makeup, prep the lid with primer, or gently apply a thin layer of concealer over the eyelid using a dampened beauty blender. Set with minimal translucent powder. Choose high quality shadows that don’t produce a ton of fallout. I find doing the eyes first before foundation is helpful in case fallout does happen. It’s easier to clean up when you have a foundation-free face.

After the eye shadow is applied, apply your top eyeliner. For personal use, I love the tattoo liner since it’s extremely long lasting and tear proof. Makeup artists that use a felt liner on clients are not being sanitary. There is no way to properly sanitize between clients, and spraying with alcohol will only dry out the product. Make It Waterproof

Finding waterproof mascara is key. I’m not a fan of mascara primer. In my opinion, it feels like a waste of time and an extra step. When shopping for mascara, choose a wand with a slight arch. The eyelid isn’t completely straight, so having a wand with a curve feels more natural. Don’t knock the drug store brands! My all time favorite mascara is Covergirl Clumb Buster (the green one). It checks off all the boxes. The formula is water resistant, extremely buildable, and lengthens lashes while looking natural. As a bridal makeup artist, I purchase mascara more than any other product in my kit. In my opinion, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get long lasting tear proof results!

Selecting The Best Lashes

Lashes makes your eyes pop in photos. Tear proof makeup is especially important when eyes are the focus. And in 2020, I really feel the eyes and brows are the main focal point. Put your contacts in prior to putting on lashes. For those that wear glasses, opt for short individual Ardell lashes. When applied correctly, strip lashes really enhance your features. However, we’ve all witnessed a strip lash gone rogue. When the lash lifts up on the inner or outer corner of the lid it can be very noticeable. Having some extra glue and a Q-tip handy is an easy fix. After the lashes are in place, another coat of mascara helps to blend the natural lashes with the artificial ones.

The Bottom Line

Bottom eyeliner should be applied carefully. Those with watery eyes should avoid product in the water line. Choose a 24 hour eyeliner that glides on easily and doesn’t smudge. For a softer look, choose an eyeshadow color that compliments the eyelid colors used, and gently smoke out underneath the eye. Set the under eye area with a translucent powder, making sure not to over load the product. Doing so can emphasize fine lines and make the area look excessively dry. For a more universal translucent powder (one that looks good on the majority of skin tones), Laura Mercier makes a fantastic one, which also works well for those with sensitive skin. Be careful with banana powder, as the yellow pigment doesn’t match all skin tones.

Be mindful not to touch your eyes. Gently tap or pat when needing to touch your face for any reason. Avoid rubbing your eye area.
